Continuing to make another episode on The Real Stig was a no-brainer. But where do you start? I always envisioned the episodes to be very different from one another, meaning a different kind of car or a different environment for example. I went with this last option and chose Oman as my new location. Oman has some of the best kitesurfing conditions in the world during the European summer months and countless spots to discover all along the coastline.
Organizing a project this far from home brought in a few complications. The year prior to this project, I met Jamal, founder of Majan Ospreys. His company organizes kite trips along the coastline of Oman. I told him that I wanted to start my adventure in the Empty Quarter to shoot our opening scene. The Empty Quarter is a big desert between Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. He told me that this was an absurd idea and, most of all, dangerous since temperatures can rise so high that you won’t be able to record or shoot any video. But I had a certain vision in mind, and I could not picture the project without this opening scene in the desert, so we decided to go there anyway.
Said, our local tour guide, didn’t really know us that well and just thought, “These stupid tourists, what are they thinking?” But after truly suffering that first day in the desert, having to deal with so many unforeseen issues and showing our work ethic and determination to Said, he realized that we were not his average tourists. And after this first day, he knew that we were not messing around.
Finding the right people and sponsors to collaborate with, and knowing where to be when doing projects like this one, is the key to it all. I’m incredibly thankful for Jamal and his team from Majan Ospreys (https://majanospreys.com). If you’re reading this thinking, “I wanna go on a similar adventure,” make sure to check them out!
